What is La Sociedad?
La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, was formally organized in 1953 as the Spanish National Honor Society - the name was later changed in 1959 to better represent the organization.
There are 2900 chapters of SHH, a national society for those with a 92.5% average in Spanish for 3 consecutive semesters. Holding lighted candles at a special evening ceremony, students pledge to master Spanish to foster peace and understanding. They receive national SHH certificates and woven badges of the Spanish coat of arms, becoming eligible for awards: $2000 prizes for essay-writing, expense-paid trips to a Spanish-speaking country, and $35 for writings or art works published in ¡ALBRICIAS!, the SHH international magazine.
The Northside Prep Chapter began in December 2006 and the chapter was named after Rigoberta Menchú, in reverence of her efforts with human rights.
The goal of the Spanish Honor Society is to encourage students to continue their studies of Spanish and engage in community service.
